Pyre (Chita) is a Hindi drama written and directed by National Award winner Vinod Kapri, set in the Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand. It premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in 2024 and has since won 18 international awards. After a week's delay from 23 October, it releases in Indian cinemas on 30 October 2026, in Hindi and Malayalam.

Pyre Story
Padam Singh and his wife Tulsi are among the last people left in a Himalayan village emptied by migration. Their son left for Mumbai 28 years ago. When a letter arrives saying he will visit, it revives hopes they had buried, and the couple waits.
Release in India
Pyre was first scheduled for 23 October 2026 and moved by a week to 30 October. The trailer came out on 12 October. Cinépolis is distributing the film. Before the release, the makers held free screenings in Berinag, Bageshwar and Srinagar Garhwal through the mobile cinema Picture Time, for places with no permanent theatre. We mark 30 October as confirmed.
Non-actors in the lead
The leads had never faced a camera. Padam Singh Kapri, 80, is a retired Army man, and Hira Devi, 70, is also from Uttarakhand. Critics abroad praised their lived-in performances and the score by Mychael Danna, the Oscar-winning composer of Life of Pi, with Amritha Vaz.
