Production history

A live-action adaptation of Valmiki's Ramayana was announced in May 2017 and initially planned as a trilogy. In July 2019, Nitesh Tiwari and Ravi Udyawar came on board to co-direct, with Shridhar Raghavan writing the screenplay. Tiwari said Raghavan had spent about three years on it under the guidance of scholars, aiming to stay faithful while appealing to younger audiences. The team commissioned paintings from artists across India as references for sets, costumes and characters. After years of development, it was restructured as a two-part film under Tiwari's sole direction, produced by Namit Malhotra and Yash. DNEG handles the visual effects and co-produces, and post-production was reportedly planned to take about 600 days.

Ranbir Kapoor (Rama, and also Parashurama) and Yash (Ravana, his Hindi debut) joined in August 2023, Sai Pallavi (Sita) the same month and Sunny Deol (Hanuman) in October 2023. The large ensemble includes Ravi Dubey as Lakshmana, Rakul Preet Singh as Shurpanakha, Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari, Arun Govil, Lara Dutta, Kunal Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi, Adinath Kothare, and Anupam Kher voicing Jatayu. Filming began at Film City, Mumbai, in April 2024 and continued until July 2025; Part 2 began filming in March 2026. Wikipedia cites an estimated combined budget of about โ‚น4,000 crore, which would make it the most expensive Indian production.

Trailer and music

The trailer was first shown at the 'Pratham Sankalp' event at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, on 18 July 2026, and at San Diego Comic-Con on 23 July. It was released online on 30 July 2026, and an English version followed on 5 August 2026.

Music

A. R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer compose the score and songs, Zimmer's first full Indian film. Rahman has said the duo is blending Zimmer's soundscapes with Sanskrit verses and traditional Indian elements, and poet Kumar Vishwas contributed lyrics. The short version of "Ramayana (The Introduction Theme)" was released on 3 July 2025. In July 2026, T-Series acquired the music rights to both parts for a reported โ‚น75 crore.

Promotion timeline

The first glimpse, "Ramayana: The Introduction", was released on 3 July 2025 and screened for fans in nine Indian cities. After an announcement on Ram Navami (26 March 2026), Ranbir Kapoor's first look as Rama was released on 2 April 2026, Hanuman Jayanti, following private previews in the United States.

Box office

Wikipedia cites an estimated โ‚น4,000 crore budget for both parts combined, including marketing. We do not treat this as a per-film figure.
