Star Wars: Starfighter Release Date: 28 May 2027 Expected

The film is set about five years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and features mostly new characters. Ryan Gosling plays Kade Auberon, and newcomer Flynn Gray plays his nephew. Amy Adams plays the boy's mother, while Mia Goth and Matt Smith play antagonists who pursue them. Levy has said the film is neither a sequel nor a prequel and is set in a period of the galaxy not explored before.

Release date and status

Lucasfilm announced the title and the 28 May 2027 US date at Star Wars Celebration Japan in April 2025. The film is expected in IMAX. Disney has not yet announced an India date, so the date here is the US one and we mark it as expected.

Development

Shawn Levy entered talks to direct a Star Wars film in November 2022, but the 2023 writers' strike delayed work. Jonathan Tropper, who wrote Levy's The Adam Project, was hired in July 2024. Ryan Gosling entered talks in January 2025. Kathleen Kennedy said it would be the next Star Wars film after The Mandalorian and Grogu, a standalone story not meant to launch sequels.

Filming

Principal photography began on 28 August 2025 in the United Kingdom, with Claudio Miranda as cinematographer, and moved to Sardinia, Italy, in September. Levy reworked part of the third act during the shoot. Filming wrapped on 18 December 2025. Levy has named Return of the Jedi as the Star Wars film that most inspired Starfighter.

Footage and OTT

Footage was shown at CineEurope in June 2026 and at Disney's D23 in August 2026. A public trailer had not been released as of 23 October 2026. Like other Disney films it is expected to stream on Disney+ later, but no OTT date has been announced.
