Jailer 2 Release Date: 15 October 2026 (Released)

Jailer 2 is the sequel to the 2023 hit Jailer. Rajinikanth returns as Muthuvel Pandian, with Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik reprising their roles.

Release strategy and postponements

Early reports aimed for a 2025 release to mark Rajinikanth's 50 years in cinema. In September 2025, Rajinikanth announced a 12 June 2026 date, which was missed. A teaser on 2 July 2026 set the current date of 15 October 2026. In April 2026, clips leaked online, and Sun Pictures said its anti-piracy team was removing them. In September 2026, after reports of reshoots and a possible delay, Sun Pictures reaffirmed the 15 October release.

Production history

Nelson Dilipkumar began writing a sequel to Jailer (2023) by January 2024. A first draft was reportedly finished by April 2024, when the project was known by the working title Hukum. Sun Pictures, with Kalanithi Maran producing, announced the film in January 2025 with a teaser shot at EVP Film City, Chennai. Most of the first film's crew returned, including cinematographer Vijay Kartik Kannan, editor R. Nirmal, art director D. R. K. Kiran and composer Anirudh Ravichander. Rajinikanth returns as "Tiger" Muthuvel Pandian, alongside Ramya Krishnan, Mirnaa, Yogi Babu and Vinayakan, whose character died in the first film. S. J. Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Anna Rajan and Jatin Sarna, who plays the main antagonist, are among the new additions, and Shiva Rajkumar and Mohanlal also return.

Filming began in Chennai on 10 March 2025, including at Sathyam Cinemas and a village set at Adityaram Studios. The second schedule started in Attappadi, Kerala, on 11 April 2025, with about 20 days on the Tamil Nadu–Kerala border, followed by Coimbatore, Kozhikode (May 2025), Mysore and Goa. Filming ended in April 2026, and the film had partly entered post-production by February 2026.

Trailer and music

The announcement teaser, set to "Hukum Reloaded", was released on YouTube and in cinemas across several states on 14 January 2025, during Pongal; a behind-the-scenes video followed, disproving rumours that Rajinikanth used a body double. The release-date teaser came out on 2 July 2026, and character reveals began on 18 September 2026. Anirudh's score is his fifth film with Nelson and sixth with Rajinikanth. The instrumental "One Name" was released on 3 July 2026. The first single, "Ala Bolelo" (21 August 2026), was criticised for its mangled Malayalam; lyricist Arunraja Kamaraj said those lines were intentionally gibberish apart from a few words and were not meant to ridicule Malayalis. A second single, "One Sun One Moon", was scheduled for 25 September 2026.
