The sequel to Pushpa: The Rise follows Pushpa Raj, now a powerful red-sandalwood smuggler, and his escalating feud with police officer Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat, played by Fahadh Faasil.

Release strategy and pre-release business

First announced for 15 August 2024, the film was postponed because of unfinished shooting and post-production, briefly set for 6 December and finally released on 5 December 2024. It was released in standard, IMAX, 4DX, D-Box and ICE formats in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam, on more than 12,000 screens worldwide; 3D shows were pushed to 13 December, and a planned Bengali theatrical version was not released. Wikipedia cites record pre-release business of about ₹1,085 crore: roughly ₹640 crore from theatrical rights (including ₹220 crore for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, ₹200 crore for AA Films' Hindi rights and ₹140 crore overseas) and about ₹425 crore from non-theatrical rights. Netflix paid a reported ₹275 crore for streaming.

OTT release

The 'Reloaded' version, with over 20 minutes of extra footage, began streaming on Netflix on 30 January 2025. Wikipedia reports a ₹275 crore digital deal.

Production history

The two-part plan was announced before Pushpa: The Rise (2021) was released, and the sequel's title was revealed at the end of the first film. About 10% of the sequel had been shot back-to-back with part one, but Sukumar reworked the story. The script was completed by July 2022, with dialogues by Srikanth Vissa, and most of the first film's technicians returned, including cinematographer Mirosław Kuba Brożek. Jagapathi Babu joined in April 2023, and Sreeleela was chosen for the item number after several actresses had been considered.

Principal photography began with a test shoot in Hyderabad on 30 October 2022, followed by schedules in Visakhapatnam (January 2023), Bengaluru (March), the forests of Malkangiri in Odisha (April), an action sequence with 50 stuntmen at Visakhapatnam Port (July) and Ramoji Film City (August). A bus carrying crew members crashed on the Vijayawada–Hyderabad Expressway on 3 June 2023. Makuta VFX handled visual effects, and Naveen Nooli took over as editor in May 2024. Shreyas Talpade dubbed for Allu Arjun in Hindi. The reported budget of ₹400–500 crore places it among the most expensive Indian films.

Trailer and music

A first-look glimpse was released on 8 April 2023 and the teaser on 8 April 2024, both on Allu Arjun's birthday. The trailer was launched at Gandhi Maidan, Patna, on 17 November 2024, followed by events in Chennai, Kochi, Mumbai and Hyderabad. Devi Sri Prasad composed the songs and score, with lyrics by Chandrabose and additional background music by Sam C. S. T-Series acquired the music rights for a reported ₹65 crore. The singles were "Pushpa Pushpa" (1 May 2024), "Sooseki" (29 May), "Kissik" (24 November), "Peelings" (1 December) and "Gango Renuka Thalli" (5 December, with the album). At the Chennai event, Prasad publicly complained about the producers, a rift the producers denied and that Prasad later closed at the Hyderabad event.

Certification and runtime

The CBFC granted a U/A certificate on 28 November 2024, with a runtime of 200 minutes. The runtime is 200 minutes.

Box office

Pushpa 2 grossed a reported ₹280 crore worldwide on its first day, the biggest opening for an Indian film, with about ₹200 crore from India and ₹72 crore net from the Hindi version alone. It was the fastest Indian film to ₹400 crore (two days) and ₹500 crore (three days). Deadline Hollywood estimated the four-day gross at about ₹590 crore in India and ₹172 crore overseas. Lifetime worldwide estimates range from ₹1,642 crore to ₹1,800 crore, making it the second highest-grossing film in India and, at the time of release, the fourth highest-grossing Indian film worldwide.

Critical reception

Reviews were mixed to positive. Nishad Thaivalappil of News18 gave it 5/5, calling it a raw, action-packed extravaganza, and Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama (4.5/5) praised its mass appeal and Allu Arjun's swagger. Other critics were less positive, and the film's length of 200 minutes or more drew comment.

The post-credits scene ends on a cliffhanger and reveals the title of the third part, Pushpa 3: The Rampage, which is in development.
