Release strategy

The film premiered at the United Theater on Broadway in Los Angeles on 15 September 2026 and screened at Fantastic Fest on 17 September before its US release on 18 September. Sony staggered the international rollout, with some Asian and African markets such as Thailand and South Africa opening the following weekend and Japan on 9 October. An India release date had not been confirmed as of 25 September 2026.

Production history

Constantin Film began planning a reboot in early 2022, after Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) underperformed and Netflix cancelled its series. Zach Cregger was hired in January 2025, and Sony Interactive Entertainment's PlayStation Productions joined. Four studios, including Warner Bros. and Netflix, bid for the rights, and Sony Pictures won in March 2025. This is the eighth live-action Resident Evil film. Austin Abrams, from Cregger's Weapons, plays medical courier Bryan Hodukavich fighting through an outbreak in Raccoon City; he was in talks in March 2025 and confirmed in July. Paul Walter Hauser joined in September, and Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Johnno Wilson in October; Reis's ex-military role was originally written for a man.

Principal photography ran in Prague from 10 October 2025 to 22 January 2026, with cinematographer Dariusz Wolski and IMAX-certified filming. Ryan and Hays Holladay, who co-scored Weapons with Cregger, composed the music, and Milan Records released the soundtrack on 18 September 2026.

Box office

Projected to open at $40–50 million from about 3,600 US theatres, the film earned $8.8 million from Thursday previews and $60 million over its domestic opening weekend, plus $48.3 million internationally, for a $108.3 million global debut. That was a record opening for the franchise and for Cregger. As of 22 September 2026, it had grossed $76.6 million in the US and Canada and $46.4 million elsewhere, about $123.3 million worldwide, against a reported $75 million budget.

Critical reception

Rotten Tomatoes reported 96% positive reviews from 249 critics (average 7.7/10), and Metacritic gave it 79 out of 100. According to Wikipedia, that makes it the best-reviewed Resident Evil film and the highest-rated video game adaptation on both sites. CinemaScore audiences gave it a "B+", the highest grade for any film in the series. TheWrap's William Bibbiani praised it as both an effective horror film and a successful game adaptation.
