Production history
Vishesh Films announced Awarapan 2 in March 2025 as a direct continuation of the 2007 film, with Nitin Kakkar directing and Emraan Hashmi returning as Shivam Pandit. Mohit Suri, who directed the original, was busy with another film and was not approached. Hashmi said the screenplay went through several revisions over nearly two years. Pre-production began in April 2025, and principal photography ran from September 2025 to June 2026 in Bangkok, Rajasthan, Malaysia and Mumbai. During the Rajasthan schedule Hashmi suffered an abdominal injury while shooting an action sequence and underwent surgery, and photos of his and Disha Patani's looks leaked from the set.
Patani plays the female lead and Shabana Azmi the antagonist. The film marks the debut of Aniruddh Rawal, son of Paresh Rawal, and of Puran Gabbi, brother of Wamiqa Gabbi, who plays another antagonist; Shaad Randhawa and Shriya Saran reprise their roles from the original in cameos. It was produced by Vishesh Bhatt and distributed by Pen Marudhar.
Trailer and music
The teaser was released on 29 June 2026, a motion poster revealing Hashmi's character on 29 July, and the official trailer on 6 August 2026; before the trailer, the makers clarified that the film had not been delayed. The songs are by Mithoon, Jeet Gannguli, Amaal Mallik, Akhil Sachdeva and Wasif Ahmad, with a background score by Raju Singh. The album, released by Sony Music on 11 August 2026, includes "Ve Junoon", "Yeh Awarapan", "Tera Mera Rishta" and "Toh Phir Aao"; the last two were originally sung by Pakistani singer Mustafa Zahid.
Certification and runtime
The CBFC granted a U/A 16+ certificate on 5 August 2026 with a final runtime of 140 minutes. Its Examining Committee ordered about four minutes of deletions and 20 seconds of replacements, including static disclaimers on scenes of child trafficking and drug use, replacement of objectionable words and trimming of violent scenes.
Box office
Awarapan 2 opened with ₹21.89 crore net in India and about ₹27 crore gross worldwide on day one, Emraan Hashmi's biggest opening (The Indian Express reported the same ₹27 crore worldwide figure). It crossed ₹100 crore net in India on 19 August 2026. Wikipedia's compilation puts the worldwide gross at about ₹207.3 crore (₹173.71 crore India gross and ₹33.41 crore overseas), calls it a commercial success, and ranks it as the seventh highest-grossing Hindi film of 2026.
Critical reception
Reviews were mixed to positive; Rotten Tomatoes listed 47% of 19 critics' reviews as positive (average 5.7/10). Rishabh Suri of the Hindustan Times (3.5/5) described it as a deliberately old-school sequel that recreates 2000s Bollywood, with a predictable plot and too much action in places. Sreeju Sudhakaran of Rediff.com (2/5) found Hashmi fully committed but the script ordinary, while Bhumi Vashisht of The Sunday Guardian praised Hashmi's performance and the film's nostalgia. The ending leaves room for another sequel, which has been reported but not officially announced.
