Release strategy

The title and first-look poster, showing Khan with a salt-and-pepper look, were unveiled on 2 November 2025, his 60th birthday. An announcement video later confirmed a 24 December 2026 release for Christmas Eve, in Hindi with Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and English dubs. Pen Marudhar will distribute in India and Yash Raj Films overseas.

Production history

After Pathaan (2023), Shah Rukh Khan was reported to be teaming with Sujoy Ghosh on an action thriller that would also feature his daughter Suhana; Siddharth Anand later took over direction and co-wrote the film. Sajid Nadiadwala transferred the title King, originally registered for a shelved Hrithik Roshan project, to Red Chillies Entertainment. Khan and Suhana were confirmed in February 2024, with Khan playing a skilled assassin and Suhana his protégé. Abhishek Bachchan joined in July 2024 as the main antagonist, Abhay Verma in August 2024, and Deepika Padukone in April 2025 after initially declining.

Planned start dates in late 2024 and January 2025 slipped while Anand reworked the script. Filming began in May 2025 at Mehboob Studios, Mumbai, where a prison action sequence with about 200 stunt performers was shot in June. Raghav Juyal injured his leg during stunts, and in July 2025 Khan suffered a muscle injury while filming at the Golden Tobacco Factory in Vile Parle and travelled to the US for treatment, briefly delaying the shoot. The second schedule began in Warsaw in September 2025, and other locations include Gdańsk and Cape Town.

Music

Anirudh Ravichander composes the background score and shares song duties with Sachin–Jigar, replacing Anand's usual collaborators Vishal–Shekhar. Reports that Ed Sheeran contributed a track followed Khan's appearance in Sheeran's "Sapphire" video, but this had not been officially confirmed as of 25 September 2026.
